  1. 2.  Whitmal BONNER was born 1775, Clarke, Georgia, USA (son of Thomas BONNER, Jr. and Margaret JONES); died 1821, Jasper, Georgia, USA; was buried , Homestead in Shady Dale, Jasper County, Georgia.

    Notes:

Whitmal Bonner was born in 1775 to Thomas Bonner and Margaret (Jones) Bonner and died in 1821. Whitmals was 46 years old. Whitmal owned 65 acres at Shoulderbone Creek in Greene County, Georgia. He enrolled in Captain Kimbrough?s district, the Lower Battalion of Greene County. This was near his father?s place on Powell?s Creek. Whitmal did not leave a will when he died. He was married to Alice ?Allie? Selman at the time of his death. His estate was divided among his fifteen children, ten who were minors. They were: Jonathan; George W.; Whitmal Jones; Josiah M.; Bedford; William S.; Bethany; Caroline; Unknown Daughter; Mary J.; Matilda; Mattie Mae; Polly; Betsy; and Lorena.

"Whitmal Bonner (1775-1820) appears first on the tax books of Greene County in 1796 at which time he owned 65 acres on Shoulderbone Creek, and one slave. He was enrolled in "Captain Kimbrough's District, Lower Battalion of Greene County" which was near father's place on Powell Creek. He remained in the community for three or four years after which time his taxable property had increased to approximately 300 acres and 4 slaves. He appeared on the Appalachee in 1803 where he returned land for taxes in Clarke County. In 1808 he appears in Morgan County where he began to purchase land in the adjacent county of Jasper. In 1817 he bought from Isaac Newton lot number 97 in the Sixteenth District. This lot of 200 acres lies on Shoal Creek within six miles of the court house in Monticello, on the road leading to Shady Dale. Since this apparently was a highly developed farm it is believed that it became his place of residence. A two-story house of hewn logs, probably dating to this period, was standing in 1965 on this lot. A less likely location of Whitmal's residence is on lot number 224 in the Thirteenth District, acquired from William Keener in 1815. This lot lies south of Monticello on Wolf Creek. (Earlier, he had bought a fractional part of this lot from Phoebe Gibbs.) Still a third location might be lot number 15 lying also on Wolf Creek, in the Fourteenth District which had been drawn by John Pearce in the land lottery of 1806. Apparently this purchase made of John Pearce in 1808 for $550 was the first land purchased by Whitmal in Jasper County.

Whitmal died intestate in 1821, by which time hi had acquired a relatively large estate. The records of the administration of his estate indicate the his wife at this time was Alice (Allie) Selman, daughter of Col John Stedman who lived on Freeman's Creek in Clarke County. Whitmal was the father of fifteen children, ten of whom were minors. In the division of his property, each legatee received from one to three Negro Slaves."

Minor sons of Whitmal in 1821:

    Whitmal Jones Bonner

    Bedford Bonner

  1. 4.  Thomas BONNER, Jr. was born 1744, Beaufort County North Carolina, USA (son of Colonel Henry BONNER, IV and Sarah Elizabeth LUTEN); died 30 Dec 1804, Clarke County Georgia, USA.

    Notes:

Thomas Bonner was born in 1744 to Henry Bonner and Sarah (Luten) Bonner and died on 30 Dec 1804 at his home near Dove Creek in Clarke County, Georgia. He was 60 years old. Thomas fought for Roebuck's Regiment in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. He married Margaret Jones on 06 May 1767 in Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. Thomas and Margaret had eight boys and two girls: Jordan, Zadok, Nancy, Whitmal, Mary, Thomas, Allen, Willis, Josiah, and Daniel.

Thomas and Margaret's marriage record lists his name as Thomas Bonner, Jr. This is because when his father died, he was a minor child. He was sent to live with Henry's brother. Since his brother had a son named Thomas, there were two Thomas Bonners living in the same house. The elder one was known by Senior, and the younger one was known by Junior, no matter their true relation. This is why Thomas (1744) is known as Thomas Bonner, Jr. on some historical documents.

Thomas married Margaret JONES 6 May 1767, Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. Margaret was born 1753, Chowan County North Carolina, USA; died 1 Sep 1804, Clarke County Georgia, USA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Margaret JONES was born 1753, Chowan County North Carolina, USA; died 1 Sep 1804, Clarke County Georgia, USA.

    Notes:

Margaret (Jones) Bonner was born in 1753 in Chowan County, North Carolina and died on 01 Sep 1804 in Clarke County, Georgia. She was 51 years old. Margaret married Thomas Bonner on 06 May 1767 in Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. Thomas and Margaret had 10 children: Jordan; Zadok Augustus; Deborah Nancy; Whitmal; Mary; Thomas; Allen; Willis; Josiah; and Daniel.
It has been said that her parents were Nathan Jones and Elizabeth (Slaughter) Jones, but this is a mistake. Elizabeth did marry Nathan Jones, but she was not born until 1753, the same year as Margaret. Elizabeth obviously could not be the mother of Margaret. Margaret?s parents are unknown, but it is possible that her father may be Thomas Jones. This guess is based on land sales to Thomas Jones that he deeded a percentage of to Thomas and Margaret Bonner. The only logical explanation to him doing this is that he was Margaret?s father. However, there is no proof that he is her father.
It is believed that Margaret is buried at the Bonner plantation near Dove's Creek in Clarke County, Georgia. This is more than likely an unmarked grave.

William married Frances WALKER 1775, Overwharton Parish, Stafford, Virginia, USA. Frances (daughter of John WALKER) was born 1755, Albemarle, Virginia, USA; died 1830, Upson, Georgia, USA. [Group Sheet]

  1. 8.  Colonel Henry BONNER, IV was born 1706, Albemarle Stanly County North Carolina, USA; died 1766, Chowan County North Carolina, USA.

    Notes:

Henry Bonner was born in 1706 in Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina to Henry Bonner and Deborah (Whedbee) Bonner and died in 1766 in Chowan County, North Carolina. He was 60 years old. It is unknown the exact date of Henry's death, but he died between 17 Jul 1766 and 06 Nov 1766. He made his last will and testament on 17 Jul 1766. Henry married Sarah Luten in about 1729. Henry and Sarah had three known sons: Thomas; William; and Henry. It is possible that they had more children prior to 1744 when Thomas was born, but there is no record confirming this. If there were more children, then they died before 1766, because no other child is mentioned in Henry?s will.
After Sarah?s death in 1750, Henry married Elizabeth Hardy. Henry and Elizabeth had one son: Richard. After Henry?s death, Elizabeth married William Roberts and had at least six more children with him.
