Had he lived until the 21st of December, he would have been ninety years old. He is survived by thirteen children. The deceased was a veteran of the civil war. He enlisted August 20, 1862, from Broome county, NY and was mustered into the US service August 29, 1862, at Binghamton. As a private he served three years in Company C, 137th regiment NY, volunteer infantry, under Captains W. L. Hoskins, D.P. Russell, and William N. Sage, and Col. David Ireland and Lt. Col. K.S. VanVorhees. The regiment was organized at Binghamton and left the state for Washington, DC, Sept 25, 1862. It was attached to the 12th Corps Army of the Potomac to October 1863 to April 1864, and 20th Corps from April 1864 to June 1865. The Army of the Cumberland moved to Harper's Ferry September 27 to 30, 1862, engaged at Charleston, VA, Nov 9, 1862; Charleston and Berryville, Dec. 2, 1862; battle of Fredericksburg in Reserve D, Dec 13, 1862; Mud March Jan 20 to 24, 1863; battle of Chancellorsville May 1 to 4, 1863; Gettysburg, PA, July 1 to 3, 1863; was captured July 2, 1863, and taken to Belle Island, VA and held there for three months. There he was paroled and sent to the hospital until October 1863, and rejoined the regiment at Savannah, Georgia. The regiment moved to Bridgeport, Alabama, Sept. 24, 1863, and joined the Army of the Cumberland. Engaged in battle of Wauhatchie, Tenn., Oct 28-29, 1863; battles of Orchard Knob, Nov 23; Lookout Mt.
